The great snack debate!

Here is the link to the original article I mentioned yesterday – take a look and let me know what you think!

I look at my now 4- year old’s schedule for March. Every week there is a party. Dr Suess, St Patty’s, Easter. All these events require junk food! This doesn’t include the birthday parties. I wish they could require only healthy snacks to be brought in. Giving kids as young as 2-years old treats at school often doesn’t seem fair – I feel they are too young to decide for themselves if they have had enough sugar or not. I like giving my kids treats and making them pancakes with chocolate chips in them… but I feel like they are getting so much crap at school that I better feed them all healthy stuff at home! I am all about moderation. Weigh in on your thoughts in the comments.

THE PLAN. DAY 4.

What about snacking for myself? I like to snack. I don’t like to eat 4 square meals. The plan is teaching me some good snack ideas – carrots with almond butter? Who would have thought?!  There is a ton of broccoli on the plan, zucchini, chia, flax, and CARROTS!  What do you think about snacking?  I am doing better at eating a meal at breakfast and not picking. I’m learning a lot!

So my first day of “testing” included cheese today. I started the day with a walk and some arms, and a cup of delicious coffee! I have never added half and half to my coffee before – usually I do half almond milk, half coffee.  From Lyn Genet’s THE PLAN-”Why half and half over milk? ” “Because the reactive and allergenci potential of milk comes from the milk sugars and protein, and fat buffers the sugar absorption. The more fat a milk product contains, the less these substances can affect our health and weight.”  With the half and half and some coconut milk, I didn’t need any sugar in that. It was wonderful!  Breakfast was this blueberry pear chia compote that I switched in yesterday. I couldn’t deal with the flax granola anymore. Today I was allowed to have chocolate. I was a textbook case today. Chocolate? Oh, for dessert? Isn’t dessert after every meal? I had a taste mid morning. MMM so good! You’re going to take something away from me, then I’m going to overdo it when I can have it back. I should have just had a piece every day of the cleanse. Well, I think I got the deprivation out of my system and I feel so much better today!  This morning I was pretty hungry and ate a handful of almonds.

Lunch was grilled vegetables with pumpkin seeds and GOAT CHEESE (1 oz) – it was very good!  After lunch, I got out my kitchen scale to see how much chocolate was 1 oz. It was 4 dove squares. I wish I could have bottled the emotion that I felt at this time – haha!  4!!  My snack was carrots and 2 T almond butter. I may have had more than that. I made it to dinner with lots of water and tea .  Dinner was a big salad with spinach, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, avocado, and broccoli.   After dinner I made some sunflower butter, and had chocolate chips. I think I ate too much chocolate today, and the sun-nut butter was not in the plan. So I kind of cheated and was a fail for today. Oh well. There’s always tomorrow and I’ll try to get on board again. FAIL.

The recipes are great, but I’m sick of eating the same foods.

  1. I liked the article – didn’t expect to, actually (I know, I know – get off my soapbox). My son’s soccer team ONLY allowed water. No other drinks, no snacks. I thought that was interesting. It was a 5:45-6:45 practice/game, so I guess most kids had eaten dinner or at least a large snack beforehand, so no post-game snacks were even considered. This was with the YMCA, so maybe they are trying to take a look at this issue. The article definitely made me think of the way I ALWAYS carry snacks with us when we are on the go. I can see how that gets away from the mindful eating I preach. Thanks for sharing!

  2. I love those little Dove chocolates. When I have a craving for something sweet it’s nice to have those around so I can limit myself to 2-3 and that usually satisfies my craving.

I love to hear your thoughts, write away!
